You have done the work, read the books, hired the coaches, maybe even been to therapy.

You can explain your patterns better than anyone and you know where they came from and when they show up.

Yet, you still do it.

This is the point where a lot of capable people decide something is wrong with them, which is untrue despite the strong feeling that something is.

Understanding a belief and changing a belief are two different jobs, and almost everything you have tried so far only does the first one.

Insight is the first step, and people treat it as the last

When you finally see why you do something, it feels like a breakthrough. For a few days you act differently. Then pressure arrives, and the old response is back before you have had time to think.

That happens because the belief is not stored as an idea you can argue with. It is stored with a feeling attached. When the situation comes up, the feeling fires first, and your understanding arrives a second too late.

So the work has to reach the feeling. That is what my process, The Rewire Code, is built to do, in four phases.

  1. Baseline
  2. Deletion
  3. Installation
  4. Integration
The Rewire Code: four phases, in order.

Phase one: Baseline

Baseline is about seeing clearly.

We settle your nervous system, because a mind that is braced for threat will not let anything change. And we get specific about what is running underneath: the exact belief, in your own words, and roughly when it began.

This is the phase insight belongs to. It matters, because you cannot change what you cannot see. It is the start.

Phase two: Deletion

This is the phase nearly everyone skips, and it is the reason their results did not last.

The name needs explaining. A memory does not get deleted. You will still remember what happened. What goes is the emotional charge attached to it, and with it the belief that the charge was holding in place.

I know this from my own experience.

The chapel at Derek Elder's Mum's funeral, with flowers spelling Daughter and Sister in front of the altar

For years there was one memory I went to bed thinking about and woke up seeing: the curtains closing at my Mum's funeral. It was the last time I would ever see her, even in a coffin, and it replayed in my mind every day.

Each time, I saw a 19 year old boy standing there crying, and it broke me. More often than not it ended in tears, with a horrible feeling in my chest and my stomach. That one memory set my state for the day before the day had even started. I could not operate at my full potential, because it was always there.

When I did this work on myself, the memory did not go anywhere. I can still see those curtains closing. What changed is what comes with it. The emotion that used to flatten me is no longer attached.

Now when I look at that moment, I see a boy standing with hope and pride, knowing the impact he is going to have on the world by using what he has been through.

It is the same memory, and it no longer runs me.

How I do that with a client is the part I keep for the work itself. What matters here is the principle: until the charge has been dealt with, anything you put on top of it will not hold.

Phase three: Installation

Once the old belief has gone quiet, there is space. Installation fills it.

We build the identity you are moving into, in detail, and you experience it first hand.

That experience matters more than it sounds. Your mind responds to something vividly imagined in much the same way it responds to something real.

Think of a dream that felt so real you woke up with your heart racing. Nothing had happened, and your body reacted anyway.

In hypnosis we use that on purpose, you live that life and feel what it is like to be that person before it has happened, and that gives your mind a blueprint to work towards.

You leave with a way to bring that state back on demand.

This is also why so much personal development wears off. Affirmations, vision boards, new habits and morning routines are all Installation. They are good tools. But they are being laid on top of a belief that is still active, and you cannot install something new on top of something that is still holding tension.

That one sentence explains years of effort that did not stick.

Phase four: Integration

Integration is where the change stops being something you do and becomes who you are.

What we build in a session has to show up in your decisions, your work and your relationships. So you use it in the moments that used to trigger the old response, and each time you act from the new state, it becomes more natural. Before long it is simply how you operate.

This is where insight becomes identity.

Every new level has its own ceiling

You do not have one belief. The pattern that held you at one level is rarely the one that holds you at the next. As the business grows, the decisions get bigger, the visibility gets higher, and something new comes to the surface.

That is why I work with clients on an ongoing basis. Each time you reach a new level, we find what is in the way there and go again: Deletion, then Installation, with Integration running in the background the whole time.

Every new level has its own ceilingThree steps rising from left to right, each with a dashed ceiling above it. At each level a small loop runs from Deletion to Installation and back. A continuous gold line labelled Integration runs underneath all three levels. Deletion Installation Level 1 Deletion Installation Level 2 Deletion Installation Level 3 Ceiling Integration

One of my clients, Rhyanna, put the difference like this:

“I'd done other work in the past, but it was never moving me forward. This has been the switch I actually needed. I'm not overthinking, or procrastinating anymore, I'm just doing it.”

What this means for you

If you understand your patterns and they have not changed, you have completed phase one, and the things you tried next were phase three.

The piece that was missing sits in between.
